Somewhere in the reviews someone had mentioned you need at least a 3gpm pump, we learn by experience, so I found that out the hard way, and eventually got one. Problem solved. Now it pulls a mean vacuum... I took off one star because it barely pulled a sustainable vacuum, if you can call it that, with a 1.5 L/m pump.

Product was exactly what I was looking for and it arrived promptly as well. I would purchase it again in the future.

I had previously purchased a Nalgene aspirator, and the little rubber flap check valve in it tore fairly quickly. The Humboldt design has a rubber ball for a check valve, not likely to tear. The machining on it is a little rough, and it uses more water than the Nalgene design - but pulls a higher vacuum, and faster. Then it keeps the vacuum held when the water's turned off - because the check valve doesn't totally suck. The lower tube part unscrews, and will make a short aspirator pump, if that's what you want - I can't attest to the performance of removing the tube though, haven't experimented enough with it. I put a aluminum mesh washing machine filter-like thing around it with a zip tie, and that reduced the otherwise intense splashing from the high speed water flowing out. I did this also with the Nalgene. This one still sprays more than the Nalgene, but does it's job. I haven't found any guidelines on the required flow rates or pressures, but it seems to work fine with a rural well pump's water pressure, somewhat less than you'd find in most cities. It can pull about as close to a 'perfect' vacuum, according to my cheap automotive vacuum gauge - though it's not going to pull a HARD vacuum. Close enough for my purposes, however. Can boil wine at room temperature given enough time. Just uses a fair amount of water to do so. Anyone needing a REAL vacuum pump will want to buy one of those instead. (HVAC/refrigerant service; many scientific processes.. etc. you know who you are. :)
As others have noted, this takes a *lot* of water to function. I tried a 130PSI 1.5LPM pump and it barely pulled any vacuum, it was less than I could make with my mouth. I then got a 5.5GPM 70PSI pump and it works very well, though the vacuum pumping rate won't set the world on fire. I have several rotary vane vacuum pumps and even the smaller ones seem to outdo it, but then they're not really for the same applications. This pump is great for pumping down volatiles and anything that might dissolve in pump oil (Especially water) which will really hurt your rotary vane pump, requiring a complete oil change. Just great for pumping down reactions that may work better at lower pressures/temperatures. I think someone else mentioned using it with a 3.5GPM pump successfully, and that definitely seems like the minimum flow you'd want to try it with.

This thing seems to pull a pretty decent vacuum. I haven't measured it or anything I just did a quick test and it's some pretty good suction on it my water here is extremely cold too which helps the winter time it averages about 38°. Nonetheless great product a lot better than the nalgene one I have which did absolutely nothing except back feed water into the trap.

It is working well. But water sometimes flow back to the side tube due to high vacuum. Anyway it is nice based on cheap price.

This little daemon is simply BadAss! It's so badass and virtually bulletproof, that if given half the chance and properly hooked up, it could "literally" suck the atmosphere clean off the face of the planet. I have mine in a recirculating water circuit setup, and force fed by a 4.5GPM SEAFLO diaphragm water pump. This thing draws down to 28.5 inHg! No small thanks to the clever twin venturi nozzles. Which explains why draws down deeper, faster and needing more water volume. A real best-buy in the truest sense of the word.

Bought two of these from different sellers last year and neither one would attain advertised vacuum with recommended water pressure. I was trying to use them on a kitchen faucet supplied via city water with pressure from water tower. It took both faucets turned on to the max to get just about 21" Hg, which still wasn't the advertised 28-30" Hg. I finally went with an electric vacuum pump instead.

I don't know what model anyone else received but you need a 3/8th inch NPT threaded female fitting. This is a nice option: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07V47QY5Y?ref=ppx_yo2ov_dt_b_product_details&th=1 The pump screws in to the 3/8th female threads which then will thread in to a 1/2" hose for a hand held detachable shower head. With just that it pegs out my vacuum gauge at over 70cm Hg. Also tried with a cheap yet supposedly high flow sump type water pump but that failed likely due to the pump being a complete failure. 3500 LPH - Not even close. Update: I am impressed! This aspirator really performs! Inspired me to get creative so I built an all-in-one 15 gallon distillation vessel. Using the sump pump secured to the bottom of the tank for the condenser water line. then mounted a ~$60 5GPM high flow diaphragm pump (linked below) through a hole cut in the lid. only the tail of the pump protrudes out and the aspirator + all connectors and hoses are contained inside the vessel. with water In / Out and Vac line connectors drilled through the lid. What a fun project! Still a bit loud but is pulling far deeper than my vac gauge can measure (well over 24 inches) So far this pump is working out just fine... https://www.amazon.com/dp/B08BCFK7SD?psc=1&ref=ppx_yo2ov_dt_b_product_details
