I'm not impressed with this device, especially for the price. It is made of cheap plastic. The instructions are fairly clear and it was easy to set it up to get started, but I question the accuracy if you are not doing anything strenuous. It does not seem to record calories until you reach a certain exertion level. I wanted to know how many calories I burn when I am just "living."
I've used Caltracs for about 15 years. it is a great tool to motivate you to burn more calories. But the clip breaks easily, and is very difficult to find a replacement. Also, the clip tends to slide off your waistband, and if the Caltrac hits the floor or ground too hard, the motion detector feature stops working. Over the years I've probably bought 5 or 6 Caltracs to replace the ones that got broken. I keep saying I'm not going to buy another one and risk wasting my money if the clip breaks, but then I miss having something to motivate me to exercise more. I would ask the makers to include a couple of extra clips when you buy the Caltrac, because you will eventually need them./

clips break and you have to spend $40 and buy a whole new caltrak just to get a 25 cent clip. really? whoever makes this product is out-to-lunch. they're willing to lose customers because no one can find a 25 cent clip, and the company is inaccessible to even ask about this. I've been using the Caltrac for three months now & find it to be ok. I don't like that I can't turn it off to save the batteries when not in use. I do find the calorie burning count to be a great guide, but I don't feel it's very accurate as it gives almost the same results as my mini elliptical - that does not use weight, height or sex to calculate calories burned. Still, it's a motivator & usefull. No regrets!
I saw Caltrac mentioned in "Shape" magazine and decided to buy it. I'm very happy with the product. It's about the size of a pager and is easy to use. Enter some personal data (age, weight, etc.) and it will track the calories you burn all day long -- whether you're working out or sitting at your desk. Best of all, it has special modes to track calories burned during weightlifting and other forms of exercise. At its simplest, this product will make you more aware of how many calories you burn and hopefully inspire you to move more. Take it a step further and you can input the calories you consume to see if you wind up eating more than you burn. In the past month, I've lost 10 pounds using this methodology. Of course, I still have to exercise and monitor what I eat. But I love that I now have specific data to inspire me to do so! The only suggestion I would make to the manufacturers is that they make it in black . . . the turquoise color is not exactly subtle!
The product worked fine, and I was very happy with it. I was able to see how total calories I burned (activity and resting), was able to enter the calories that I eat/drank, and was able to see the difference between the two to see if I needed to eat more or less to keep in the fat burning stage. However, after a week and a half, I laid it down as I slept. When I woke up in the morning, it had stopped working. It smelled like it was burning on the inside, like circuitry problem. I tried to contact the Caltrac customer service, and I keep getting the fax machine. BEWARE!

The Caltrac is very easy to set up and use. Rather than have to carry around a notebook for keeping track of my calories, I just enter them right away before I eat each meal/snack. It makes it so much easier to make sure you end up in the correct range for your calorie deficit (if you're trying to lose weight) - it does the math for you. Just make sure your number is in the recommended range for your goal (more info in the included booklet).

You never know how many steps you take until you start walking, so you never know how many calories you burn until you start counting. I still use this, I bought this at the recommendation of a friend. It works ok.
Caltrac is a great tool for keeping you aware of your level of activity. Its amazing how little we actually burn without adding any intentional exercise. The device is accurate and works great but the clips on the back that you use to clip it to your pant waist or belt break very easily. The clips are removable so you can replace them when they break. Just slide the broken one out and the new one in only comes with two clips so you have to contact the manufacturer who is supposed to send you as many as you need as often as you like free of charge. So far I've yet to receive any that Ive requested. When I say the clips break easy I go thru about 5 or 6 a month. When I first bought my caltrac they did indeed replace the clips speedily but years later Im not getting anymore response to my requests for clips. Something as simple as bending over can snap a clip in half. To bad they cannot make the clips out of some type of flexible metal or aluminum. Its a hassle to be constantly asking for more clips and hoping they arrive and without the clips you cant use the caltrac. It needs to be clipped to your waist for accurate results.
