It sounds fine IF it can read the cd. Literally half the time it doesn't. I tried the cds on my older Yamaha and all is great. So I figured it was a bad egg, returned and ordered another. Same thing, you just never know if it will read the cd, half the time it doesn't. The one I bought four years ago has been perfect, this run of shoddy Chinese craftsmanship is just plain bad. A waste of time.

Easy to hook uo and plays CD's great

I haven't had it all that long, and it skips. (Sounds like an LP with a hair on it). The same CDs don't skip in the 15 year old CD player in my 15 year old car. I originally gave it 3 stars, but reduced that to one star.
I've been buying CD players since 1985; in fact, my first CD player was a Yamaha, back in 1985. Admittedly, that Yamaha player was not particularly good, as it only lasted about a year. Since then, however, I've purchased many other players - including other Yamaha players - and can confidently say the CD-S303 is a solid unit, especially for the relatively low $$. Running this through a Yamaha receiver and some old(er) Polk bookshelf speakers, I immediately noticed the bright and warm sound -- a vast improvement over the (cheap) Sony DVD/CD player I had been using. I'd resisted spending money on a real player, but as I'm now working from home and listening to music throughout the day, I wanted my home office system to sound as good as the living room stereo. If you enjoy music, and enjoy listening to music on CD, you deserve to get a quality player. For the money and - based on my experience, the evolving, solid reputation of Yamaha equipment over the past 35 years -- the S303 shouldn't disappoint you.
The Yamaha is a first rate machine. I have a sophisticated recording studio with only high end gear, and have worked in professional audio for 30 years. I have compared sound quality of CD players in the professional category. This machine, while not the $1000 Yamaha, it comes close, and does a very good job of replicating what is on the master mix tracks heard in our studio. It is an excellent buy!

Like others, I had high hopes. Sounded OK using the digital output. Checked the firmware, found it needed updating. Tried ca. 7 times with different USB sticks; update always failed. Instructions for update are vague and incorrect. Then it began to misread commercial CDs, and wouldn't load some CD-Rs. Very poor error correction on this machine, surprised Yamaha would put out such garbage. Or maybe not so surprised; their inexpensive receiver was a match for this CD player regarding quality, but at least it worked. Still have the receiver as a back-up, but thankfully Amazon took back the CD player.

Yamaha cd player very easy to install and has great sound quality if you’re playing professionally manufactured cds. HOWEVER, if you want to play cds you’ve made on your laptop or cd recorder forget this one. Played initial cd and after fifteen minutes pops and skips on pristine cds I recorded. Had the same problem no matter who manufactured the blank music cd. It seems many cd players have this problem regardless of the brand. If any knows a brand that can play any and all types of cds without pops and skips, please let me know. I’ll have to stick with my dvd player even though the sound quality is not the best
