Unlike other complaints that I'v seen on line, I don't think it was a problem with the gears because if you manually turn the crystal, the gears turn. Very disappointed. I would suggest some quality control before the manufacturer ships these devices. (this may be my first negative review for any product that I've purchased on Amazon.)

I have ordered six of these to give to family and i kept two for myself. Three of the 6 didn't work correctly - even with plenty of sun. I end up loosing all screws in the back. Placed back in window and two began working correctly immediately. Jury is still out on the third. For the ones that do spin continually -they are beautiful. Likely would order again.

Bought a few of these Rainbow Makers. One quit working after a few months. We contacted Kikkerland and they said the warranty had expired and they would give us a discount on purchasing a replacement. Well, that's like paying more for the one that no longer works on the bet that the new one will not stop working also. Kikkerland really does not stand behind their product, particularly one that costs $30+ dollars. If it had been a couple of years when the Rainbow maker had quit, that might be more understandable - but after a few months that not acceptable. Providing a replacement for a repair would have created more loyalty to purchase other products from Kikkerland in the future. As it is, we are not likely to purchase from them again. Buyer beware!
