Dried shrimp are used a lot in various Asian cuisines as a source of flavor and glutamates, and (as I more recently learned) in several South and Central American cuisines as well. I use them in Chinese rice and noodle dishes, in rice dishes, in kimchi, and more. This is the first time I've tried a ground-up version, and I find that it works well in any recipe where you might soak or steam the shrimp and then pound them into a paste or chop the up. The price of dried shrimp depends on quality and size, with the smallest and broken dried shrimps being the cheapest. At $12.55 for 2.5 ounces, this comes to $5.02/ounce, which is about twice the price of small to medium sized whole dried shrimp.
Well, needless to say Shrimp Powder in all forms and shapes is a must for us to use in Asian dishes. It can get a bit costly but it is what it is. This particular product is not from Asia. It is from Ecuador. Nothing wrong with that. Tastewise it comes quite close to Asian style shrimp powder. I like the fact that it is not ground too fine, one can steel feel bits and pieces in it. We add it to many, many dishes including soups, okonomiyaki, ramen etc. A little goes a long way.
The "powder" I received has a strong shrimpy smell, and reasonably potent flavor... but I was really expecting a much more uniform powder than what I received. While much of it is granulated (not really a powder), many of the shell chunks are 1/4 inch wide. I would describe this as shrimp flakes. For the price, it's not a bad deal though. It's potent... but I can get better value elsewhere. I ordered this March 2022, and the bag is marked Best before November 2023. Made in Ecuador. The package says to store in a cool dry place or refrigerate. The package does not indicate whether this is pre-cooked, cured, raw or otherwise... so I'm not entirely sure how safe it is to eat out of the bag.
This Inca trail shrimp powder comes in a small pack. As soon as you open it you can smell the strong shrimp scent. This shrimp powder is very fresh. Even when I closed the seal on the top of the bag. I could still smell the shrimp scent. It is that strong. This is definitely something that you should place in another zip lock bag or place in an airtight jar for storage once opened. The powder is not all finely ground so it does have some nice texture. It is perfect to to add to soups to give an extra kick of shrimp flavor. It would also be great to add to batters, too. There are so many possibilities! And since it is so pungent you only need a little. So this small pouch should last a very long time. I am very pleased with the quality and the taste of the shrimp powder
