1997 Toyota Camry LE 2.2l 4Cyl - p0401 code. Editing my review ~ a month after purchase and installing new EGR valve. I installed the new EGR valve in June 2020 due to p0401 code. Didn't solve code. Found out there was a crack on the intake hose and there was a huge rat nest in the air filter box. Cleaned and replaced those, error is gone for a couple weeks and car works fine for a few days but will, out of no where, stall when breaking. Car steadily gets worse. Stalls when breaking hard. Rough and low idle. Entire engine would vibrate hard and a p0172 will appear. Replaced egr vsv, egr modulator, pcv valve, coolant sensor, and my discontinued MAP sensor but they don't solve the problem. There are no hose leaks or clogs. Suspicious, I went back to my EGR valves and tested both the new and old valves because I had a feeling the new one was intermittently getting stuck open and causing the random stalls. Turns out the new EGR valve doesn't open easily and it sounds as if the top of the diaphragm is grinding/scratching against something when you push it open. I can only hear air from my old EGR valve and you could open the valve twice as fast. Tldr: p0401 was caused by rat's nest in air filter box, cracked air intake tube, and new EGR valve struggling to open and close. Car is running great now with old/original EGR valve. I'll update this review if anything changes.
