 The build quality and surface finish on the sieve is very good, with no rough/sharp edges. It appears to be constructed of 304 stainless steel as claimed. The 4” nominal diameter and 1.8” height are also accurate. The mesh screen itself is held tightly, creating a nice planar screen surface with no wrinkles / dimples. The sieve appears to be assembled from two nesting cylindrical sections with the mesh screen “trapped” in-between – see my sketch of the cross section as I understand it. There’s no visible weld bead or heat discoloration to suggest welding, nor any visible glue residue, which indicates that only compression is holding the screen in place. I received the 18 mesh test sieve. By definition, 18 mesh screen is equivalent to 18 wires per linear inch of screen. Conventionally, the stainless steel wire diameter used in plain weave 18x18 mesh screen is 0.43mm, so by calculation the opening between the wires should be 0.98mm (~1mm): => 25.4mm / [ 0.43mm wire + 0.98mm gap ] = 25.4mm / [ 1.41mm ] = 18 Looking at the screen mesh under the microscope, it is clearly plain weave and has a very uniform spacing. I overlayed a linear scale onto the image (w/ 0.5mm marks) and from this it appears that the spacing is in fact 1.4mm (consistent with calculation); however, when I place a square grid over the mesh, I can see that the opening (gap) between wires is closer to 1.2mm – which means that the wires themselves must be a thinner 0.2mm diameter. To be clear, this still technically meets the definition of 18 mesh (= 18 wires per linear inch), but in practice this screen mesh will pass particles slightly larger than the nominal 1.0 mm. In many cases, this level of precision is sufficient. For example, I’m using this 18 mesh sieve to separate 3mm spherical pellets from the broken pieces/dust in the bulk packaging. These 3mm spheres are going into a sediment filter and having those little pieces / dust included increases initial pressure drop in the filter, causing it to plug up more quickly. This type of separation task is not a highly precise operation and the difference between 1.0mm and 1.2mm is not significant for me. If precision is important to you, however, you should probably check the actual gap size to verify it is what you are expecting. Overall, this Sieve has adequate precision for my needs and I am happy with the product.

I tested five of these sieves to see if they would be suitable for particle-size determination for soil and sediment analysis. They are not. The screen openings (i.e., spacing between wires, or hole sizes) that I measured using a microscope were different from those specified on the labels. For each screen I measured at least ten openings selected at random across the sieve. Here are the labeled screen openings and the mean actual size I measured, with standard deviation. Labeled size, Mean actual size ± std dev (µm) 250, 270 ± 10 224, 267 ± 5 180, 218 ± 12 125, 142 ± 10 90, 76 ± 24 Some of these are off by a small amount, others by a much greater amount. It's not just a matter of the wrong label being applied because some of the measured sizes don't correspond to any other available sieve listed. Others might be simply mis-labeled; for example, the opening size in the sieves labeled 224 and 250 µm were not distinguishable. The '90 µm' sieve had a large degree of variability across the screen, and the openings were trapezoidal, not square, because the wires were 1-over, 1-under in one direction and 2-over, 2-under in the other direction. Note: I measured space between wires, wire thickness excluded. In other words I'm not measuring from the center of one wire to the center of the next, but measure across the gap only: from the edge of one wire to the nearest edge of the next. I think the manufacturer should be required to indicate clearly that the nominal screen size does not reflect actual values. As it is this is misleading and could result in someone wasting a lot of time or making wrong interpretations based on bad measurements. Does this product violate any sort of "truth in advertising" policy? These screens might be okay for some applications, but if you need precision and accuracy you'll need to measure them yourself or spend the money for a certified sieve. The specification on the label does not reflect actual screen opening size.
I got the pan and lid for free via the Vine program and that's honestly about what this is worth. When you look at the product page and you see the images of the sieves then you get the impression that these are first-rate stainless steel products that are lab-worthy. Not so based on what I received. Not even close. I decided to first get the pan with lid and build up from there, but after receiving the pan and lid I will not be adding to the collection. The lid is too big for the pan and is very cheaply stamped and had oil residue from the stamping process. The pan itself is also very poorly manufactured, dull finished with oil residue. If I had paid the full price for this item then it would have been on the way back via return the same day. I will keep the pan and lid in case I find some use for it in the shop, but as a laboratory-grade piece of kit, no way. You think with a name like LABALPHA (I should know better by now, all-caps alphabet-soup...) and a price like this for a 4"/100mm diameter sieve and pan that you'd get something worthy of the price, but nope. Do not waste your time and money. It's a real shame, too, because the other reviews and pictures reflect something wholly different in quality than what I received. It's a bummer.
This product is supposed to be individual small beads of zeolyte desiccant. The 1st order, which was replaced, arrived rock hard. Now the replacement has arrived in the same condition. Both absolutely unusable I will find a different seller as well as request a refund.
Update: The seller Hardware Factory Store made it right after I complained, so although the sieve wasn’t any good the seller sure is. Complete joke for removing water from Ethanol. Absorbed almost as much alcohol as water, raised the concentration by just a few percentage points. I strongly suspect even though it said 3 Å on the package it was actually 4 Å molecular sieve. I see a few other reviews said the same thing. If your plan is trying to remove water from alcohol, I’d look elsewhere. All the other molecular sieve brands I looked at were quite a bit more expensive and there’s probably a good reason for that.

This net is smaller than the one I was using, so that's a drawback. I don't care for the expandable feature, just need to keep adjusting it which is a pain, and I don't really need it to be expandable since I'm in the stream wearing waders. To be fair, I haven't only used it one time. Time will tell.
